Dec 16, 2024 On December 3, 2024, the Saskatchewan Bison Association, in partnership with the National Circle for Indigenous Agriculture and Food (NCIAF), hosted a meaningful ceremony on Treaty 4 territory—the traditional lands of the Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota, Dakota, Lakota, and Métis Peoples. The gathering honored the spirit of the buffalo and its deep cultural, spiritual, and ecological significance within Indigenous communities. The highlight of the event was the unveiling of a bison shoulder mount, a sacred symbol of strength, interconnectedness, and life. The mount pays tribute to the bison’s critical role in Indigenous food systems and cultural traditions, serving as a reminder of the enduring teachings of resilience, unity, and harmony with the land. NCIAF President and CEO Kallie Wood delivered heartfelt reflections on the buffalo’s place in the Seven Grandfather Teachings, where it represents respect. Her words emphasized the importance of honoring traditional knowledge and practices that continue to guide Indigenous food sovereignty and environmental stewardship. The ceremony was led by pipe carrier Larry Oakes, whose guidance brought spirit and purpose to the gathering. A powerful performance by the Lone Creek Drum Group deepened the emotional resonance of the event. Murray Feist of the Ministry of Agriculture served as emcee, and Merek Wigness of the Saskatchewan Bison Association played a vital role in organizing and supporting the event. Government officials were also in attendance, including Hon. Daryl Harrison (Minister of Agriculture), Hon. Eric Schmalz (Minister of Government Relations), Hon. Travis Keisig (Minister of Environment), and Premier Hon. Scott Moe, demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting Indigenous-led agricultural initiatives. Together, the Saskatchewan Bison Association and NCIAF proudly celebrated the buffalo as a cultural and ecological teacher, and reaffirmed their shared commitment to food sovereignty, sustainability, and Indigenous leadership.
