On November 26, 2024, the National Circle for Indigenous Agriculture and Food (NCIAF) partnered with the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance, the Coalition of First Nations for Finfish Stewardship, and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture to host “Aquaculture is Agriculture: A Celebration of Blue Food Farming in Canada” in Ottawa, Ontario.

This landmark event brought together Indigenous aquaculture leaders, farmers, industry representatives, politicians, and policymakers to recognize the vital role aquaculture plays within Canada’s agricultural landscape—especially for Indigenous communities.

As the original stewards of Canada’s lands and waters, First Nations have long practiced sustainable fish farming and fishing techniques grounded in respect for the environment. These traditions remain strong today, supporting economic stability and providing safe, healthy food locally and globally.

The event highlighted Indigenous-led sustainable aquaculture practices and emphasized their importance in addressing food security challenges. Attendees left inspired by the potential for collaboration between Indigenous communities and industry partners to advance environmental stewardship and food sovereignty.

Together, these efforts aim to honor Indigenous heritage while forging a sustainable future for Canada’s aquaculture sector.
